Both the lighter and the canister should be vertical. 3. Press the butane canister down firmly and release pressure several times to fill the lighter. You should hear a faint "hiss" as the gas enters the tank, and the butane liquid should be visible in the sight glass on the side of the lighter. 4. After filling, let the lighter sit for 3 minutes before use to allow any butane on the outside to evaporate.
